You might find a few things lurking there that surprise you \u2014 like this handful of ingredients (some of which you might not even be able to pronounce!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carrageenan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A controversial ingredient, <a href=\"https:\/\/thebeet.com\/carrageenan-is-this-common-ingredient-in-vegan-foods-really-bad-for-you\/\">carrageenan<\/a> is a popular additive found in a range of foods, both vegan and not. Derived from seaweed, the product improves foods\u2019 textures, but it\u2019s not necessarily as safe as just any ol\u2019 plant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some organizations say carrageenan is entirely safe for human consumption, other research disagrees, linking carrageenan to inflammation and cancer. This is one food that you\u2019ll definitely want to eat at your own risk, weighing the pros and cons for yourself after a little bit of reading up on the research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Methylcellulose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A similarly controversial additive, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnavigator.com\/Article\/2022\/10\/03\/replacing-methylcellulose-for-clean-label-plant-based-innovation\">methylcellulose<\/a> acts as a binding agent in several popular plant-based burgers. Unfortunately, methylcellulose is considered \u201cultra-processed\u201d and, because it\u2019s a relatively unstable ingredient, it requires the addition of even more additives wherever it&#8217;s used, in order to achieve the desired texture for a plant-based meat product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Propylene Glycol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another difficult-to-pronounce additive, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/propylene-glycol\">propylene glycol<\/a> is generally considered safe to consume, but once you found out what else it\u2019s in, you might think twice about eating anything that contains it. It\u2019s also an ingredient in <a href=\"https:\/\/consumerfreedom.com\/2021\/07\/5-chemicals-lurking-in-plant-based-meats\/\">antifreeze, cosmetics, and e-cigarettes<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gluten, sodium, saturated fats, and allergens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond ingredients like those above that are definitely not a part of a healthful, clean, whole foods diet, it\u2019s worth noting that you\u2019ll find a few things in a plant-based burger that just aren\u2019t naturally found in the burgers\u2019 all-natural alternatives \u2014 such as gluten, excess sodium, and allergens such as soybeans. As you shop for plant-based burgers in the store, look at ingredient lists and search out those burgers that are actually made with items you can pronounce and recognize. Additionally, keep an eye out for excess sodium and saturated fats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your best bet for the best, healthiest plant-based burgers? Just make them yourself at home.
